Dr. Niki Tulk is an Australian inter/multi-disciplinary artist & writer based in the US. She holds two PhDs from the University of Colorado Boulder: in Theatre & Performance Studies, and in Intermedia Art, Writing & Performance. Her experimental poetry book Owinner of the Driftwood Poetry Prize, explores the stories we craft around violence, womanhood, and justice (Driftwood Press 2022). Niki's new monograph Performing the Wound: Practicing a Feminist Theatre of Becoming (Routledge 2022) explores a feminist, embodied and ethical poetics around the performance of trauma experience.

 

Having worked at Alfred University as Assistant Professor of Theatre and Director of Theatre, she now trains theatre-makers and interdisciplinary culture-changers at Plymouth State University, NH. Niki studied Literature, Music and Theatre Making at both the University of Melbourne and the Victorian College of the Arts. She has a Masters in Education from the University of Georgia and a M.F.A. in Creative Writing from The New School, NYC, where she also taught practice-based research to undergraduate artists at Parsons The New School for Design.

Niki has published poetry, fiction, dramatic and literary criticism in Emergency Index, The Saranac Review Tenth Anniversary Edition, Rock River Review, The Sheepshead Review, The Feminist Wire, The Journal of Language and Literacy Education, Across the Margin, The West Trade Review, Southerly and Antipodes. Her novella Before Rain was a finalist for the Miami Book Fair/deGroot Prize. She is co-editor of PARtake: The Journal of Performance as Research. Niki has been studying with Ruth Zaporah (Action Theater) for many years, and is a certified teacher of Action Theater™️. Niki's collaborative arts practice combines improvisation, music/sound, material and language-based poetics—and occasionally a custom-made re-pluckable chicken.
